Stormwise Happenings, March 2018

Many opportunities for us to share the work we do with Stormwise are coming up this month! This project has inspired a great variety of research from roadside forest ecology to the social science of our communities, and even mapping forest cover with drones! We look forward to showing off and inspiring discussion among the research community as well as the communities we work in.

March 12th, there will be several Stormwise researchers presenting at the Connecticut Conference on Natural Resources (CCNR) at the UConn, Storrs campus. They include:

  • The Impact of Forest Management on Understory Edge Effects in Roadside Forest. Authors: Julia Rogers, Robert Fahey, John C. Volin, Tom Worthley (Poster) Presented by Julia Rogers.
  • Roadside tree management: Attitudes across the landscape, Presented by Daniel Hale
  • Benefits, Costs, and Decision-Making in the Residential Forest. Authors: Kloster, DP, AT Morzillo, JC Volin, B Butler, A Deener, T Worthley (Poster) Presented by Danielle Kloster.
  • Assessing the Effectiveness of Enhanced Tree Trimming in Connecticut (Poster), Presented by Jason Parent
  • Using Temporal Signatures, Multispectral Imagery, Machine Learning, and Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) to Map the Distribution of Understory Invasive Species in the Temperate Deciduous Forest. (Poster) Presented by Nancy Marek

March 24th, the UConn College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR) graduate research forum will have a talk by Stormwise researcher Daniel Hale: A landscape analysis of public attitudes toward roadside utility vegetation management.

March 27-29, the New England Society of Foresters (NESAF) meeting, in Nashua, NH, will be featuring a few Stormwise research presentations as well:

  • Extending the Value of Urban Trees, Presented by Tom Worthley and authored by Naieem Kelly, a high school student in Hartford who participated in the Natural Resources Conservation Academy. He was assisted in the project by Heather Dionne, Hartford City Forester, and Herb Virgo of the Keney Park Sustainability Project. The project addressed recovering wood products when an urban tree dies or needs to be removed, which can help to extend the trees’ aesthetics, utility and the values associated with carbon sequestration.
  • Dynamic Properties of Trees in the Roadside Forests of Southern New England. Authors: Amanda Bunce, John C. Volin, David R. Miller, Jason Parent, Thomas Worthley, Mark Rudnicki. (Poster) Presented by Amanda Bunce
  • The Impact of Forest Management on Understory Edge Effects in Roadside Forest. Authors: Julia Rogers, Robert Fahey, John C. Volin, Tom Worthley (Poster) Presented by Julia Rogers.

Best of luck to all of our presenting researchers!
